As an information and technology manager, you will plan, organise, and evaluate the policies and practices regarding the information technology projects of your firm.

What do IT managers do?

An information technology manager develops plans, create budgets and organise and integrate cross functional projects. They manage the IT staff by recruiting, training, monitoring and appraising their performance. They coordinate and direct all the day to day IT related operations happening in the company.

What does a typical day at work involve?

There may be slight variations in the duties of information and technology managers depending on the firm which they work, but in general, an IT manager would

  • Checked Understand and analyze the current working condition of the computer systems in the firm and recommend possible upgrades if needed
  • Checked Leading installations and maintaining the performance of a computer’s hardware and software
  • Checked Be aware and ensure the security of the company’s networks and computers
  • Checked Lead others who are working in similar fields in the firm and managing computer systems analysts, software developers, information security analysts, and computer support specialists
  • Checked Conduct researches and keep upto date with the new technological advancements in the IT sector

What job roles can an IT manager take up?

Responsible to plan, budget and oversee all the activities related to a specific project or projects within a company.
Provide technical support to the clients and assist them in any issue they may have.
Responsible for protecting the organisation’s data and networks against threats.
Responsible for recruiting, training and maintaining staffs of an IT firm.
Responsible for sales and promotional activities of products to commercial clients.

How to become a Strategic Manager?

Step 1
Take any stream in 10+ 2

Students with any stream at the 10+2 level would be eligible for admission into different management courses.

Note:Computer Science /Informatics Practices

Computer Science/Informatics Practices are recommended as main subjects for someone looking to build a career in the information and technology management sector.

Step 2
Take Bachelor's Degree in management

The common course offered at the UG level in management is BBA/BBM/BMS. The duration of the program is usually 3 years.

Note:Bachelors in computer science

You can either go for a B.Tech in Computer Science or BCA or BSc Computer Science before doing a Management program in IT as some programs favour candidates majored in this field.

Step 3

MBA in IT is a 2 year full time management programs available in most of the management schools.

India (From IIM Calicut for Post Graduate Programme with the specialization of Information Technology and System)

  • Candidates should complete graduation from a recognized university in India or abroad with at least 50% of marks or equivalent CGPA.
  • CAT Score.
  • IIM-K will give 40 percent weightage to CAT, 30 percent to PI (Personal Interview) score, 20 percent to WAT (Written Ability Test) and 10 percent to relevant work experience.
  • Candidates must secure 90 percentile in CAT.

Foreign (From National University of Singapore for Masters in Computing with Information System Specialization)

  • A good honours degree in computing; or A good honours degree in a related discipline with 2 years IT industry experience; or
  • A good bachelor's degree in computing with 2 years IT industry experience; or
  • A good bachelor's or honours degree in business related discipline with 2 years IT industry experience.
  • Candidates should have a minimum GRE score of 320 (verbal & quantitative) and 3.5 (analytical), or a GMAT score of 650 and above.
  • The minimum TOEFL scores for Internet Based Test (IBT) is 90; or IELTS score of 6.0.
