Product Designer

As a product designer, you will design products for everyday use by conducting user research and user testing to enhance people’s satisfaction with the product.

What do Product Designers do?

Product Designers will design products by taking broad, conceptual ideas and turning them into things useful and valuable for the users. They are also required to work with graphic designers to create logos, packaging layouts, photos, and colors for packaging, instructions, displays etc.

What does a typical day at work involve?

  • Checked Analysing the trends and requirements of the consumers
  • Checked Meeting the clients and making the samples
  • Checked Developing initial design of the product and discussing it with the clients
  • Checked Supervising the complete process starting from selecting the raw material to processing and manufacturing the product
  • Checked Evaluating the quality of the product and taking measures if there is any discrepancy

How to become a Product Designer?

Step 1
Take any stream in 12th

Candidates who have chosen any stream at the plus two level are eligible for higher studies in designing.

Step 2
Take a Bachelor's’ Degree in Designing

To build a career in Product Designing, you can either opt for a bachelor's degree in any discipline or opt the course B.Des which is offered at the UG level in the field of designing. The duration of these bachelor’s programs are usually 4 years.

Step 3
Take a Master’s Degree in Designing

Choice of a reputed institute for designing courses sometimes plays a great role. To specialise in product designing, it is advised to take a Master’s Degree in Designing (M.Des.). Top institutions offering this course in India include National Institute of Designing (NID) and National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). The duration of the course is usually 2 - 2.5 years.
