As a career counsellor, you will help students and aspiring job seekers , to know and understand themselves and the world of work in order to make career, educational, and life decisions.

What do Career Counselors do?

Career counselors work with clients at various stages of their careers, helping students choose a course/study program or determine the jobs they are qualified for with their degrees or helping people who have already entered the workforce, by developing plans for them to improve their current careers. They also provide advice about entering a new profession or helping to resolve workplace issues.

How to become a career counselor ?

Step 1
Take any stream at plus two level

Students can take any stream at plus two level and securing good score would be a prerequisite to admission into UG level.

Step 2
Take A Bachelor’s in any subject

Students who wish to pursue a job as a career counselor must have an undergraduate degree under their belt ,but undergoing a graduation in psychology or a related field will definitely be of use. Also the students have to put their efforts to acquire knowledge about different career fields and need to improve their language and presentation skills, as it will be an advantage.

Step 3
Take Post Graduation in Counselling Psychology

After completing UG you can do two year Msc in Counseling Psychology, which give you exposure to psychology and counseling. The admission to master’s will be based on entrance or merit.

Note : Post graduation diploma in guidance and counselling

This is a one year long distance Pg diploma course provided by Annamalai university.

Step 4
M Phil and PhD

After pursuing Master’s in counseling psychology you can go for M.Phil and PhD. M Phil will be of 1 to 2 years and PhD will take minimum 3 Years.

Interpersonal and communication skills

Career counselors use their excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build a good rapport with the client and also to perform services such as administering career assessments and explaining the interpretations to clients.

Listening and observation skills

Career counselor must possess good listening skills as they need to give full attention to their clients . They also need to observe nonverbal gestures to understand clients’ emotional and mental states.

Critical thinking skills

Career counsellor will be using their critical thinking to analyze results of assessment, read reports and graphs and infer conclusions.

Problem solving skills

Career counselor must possess excellent problem solving skills as they are supposed to develop strategies for clients to handle academic pressure, make them more competitive and prepared you for future career.

Writing skills

Career counselors need to use their writing skills to prepare research papers, reports and articles on various career related topics.

Presentation/public speaking skills

Career counselors will be handling career guidance sessions, motivation classes and career awareness programmes, thus presentation skill is highly required.

Team skills

Career counselors must work as a team in order to develop new and effective methods of approaching clients.
