Fitness trainer

As a fitness trainer you will be leading and teaching group fitness classes, designing exercise programs for individuals as well as coaching people on how to live healthy lifestyles.

What do fitness trainers do?

Fitness trainers develop and oversee activities in strength training, stretching, and exercise to motivate and train clients to meet their physical fitness goals. They may specialize in aerobics, weight lifting, yoga or another activity. They assess the physical and mental improvement of their clients, make changes in techniques and develop a program to meet their client’s requirements. They also educate clients on nutrition, lifestyle, and weight control to maintain good health. They teach their clients how to remain safe and free from injury and also administer first aid, wrap injuries, and evaluate the need of further treatment by a physician.

What does a typical day at work involve?

  • Checked Monitor trainee’s progress in terms of their fitness and diet
  • Checked Provide information to clients about nutrition, exercise plans and health
  • Checked Ensure security and cleanliness of the fitness centre
  • Checked Maintain fitness equipments
  • Checked Provide alternative exercise session or person centred plans for focused clients
  • Checked Make sure that the clients are following correct techniques
  • Checked Measure the body composition of clients and prepare long and short term fitness plans according to the client’s needs

How to become a Fitness Trainer

Step 1
Take any stream at +2 level

Take any stream at + 2 level for taking up further studies to become a fitness trainer. Active participation in sports and fitness programs right from school level is recommended.

Step 2
Take BSc (Exercise and Sports Sciences)/Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education

Take a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise and Sports Science which is of 4 years duration . A BPE or BP Ed course is of 3 to 4 years duration and is available in Physical education colleges across India. Bachelor’s degree programs (BAE- Physical Education) are also available in universities abroad which are of 4 year duration

Step 3
Diploma in Fitness Management/ Fitness Trainer Certification

Post graduate diploma of 1 year duration in fitness management is available in some institutes in India

There are a number of certifications offered by different bodies across the world like the American Council on Exercise (ACE), National Academy of Sports Medicine-USA (NASM), International Sports Sciences Association ( ISSA). There are fitness training institutes in India which provide training towards these certifications.

Note :

There are private institutes providing certified fitness trainer courses of short duration for high school and higher secondary school pass outs , which may enable them to take up jobs as fitness trainers in private Gyms.

Step 4
Take Master’s Degree in Exercise and Sports Sciences/Physical Education

Although postgraduate or higher qualifications are not essential requirements, it may be an added advantage if seeking employment in international sports clubs/teams. MSc in Exercise and Sports Sciences or MP Ed/ MPE /MAE(Physical Education) courses which are usually of 2 to 3 years duration are available in India and abroad

  • Pass in MBBS / BPT / BOT / BSc (Exercise & Sports Sciences) from a recognized University, with minimum 50 % aggregate marks or equivalent

Foreign (from Loughborough University of London, for M.Sc in Strength and Conditioning)

  • A bachelor’s degree, with at least 65% marks from reputed institutions in India or 70% marks from any recognized universities.
  • IELTS English language requirements is 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each individual element (reading, writing, listening and speaking).

Skills Required

Excellent communications skills

Fitness trainers have to clearly explain or demonstrate exercises to clients. Any miscommunication can lead to injuries.

Listening skills

Fitness trainers must listen carefully to what clients tell them in order to make an assessment of the clients’ fitness levels and understand their desired fitness goals.

Patience & Motivational skills.

Patience and motivational skills are very important qualities while working over long term fitness plans for clients in order to help them stay motivated and deal with setbacks that may be encountered.

Physical fitness

Fitness trainers need to be physically fit as they have to carry out demonstration classes and their job requires a considerable amount of exercise.

Problem-solving skills

Fitness trainers must evaluate the fitness levels of each client and create a fitness plan appropriate to the client’s individual needs.

Time Management

Time management is important for fitness trainers when they train clients or run a fitness center as they have to work with tight schedules.
