As a geologist, you will study the origin and evolution of the the structure of earth which mainly includes the solid features on earth (sometimes other terrestrial planets or natural satellites such as mars or the moon as well).

What do geologists do?

Geologists examine the physical properties of the solid earth and the rocks with which it is composed of. Their work includes predicting natural disasters, finding out climate patterns, and investigating renewable and non-renewable resources. They also contribute to the fields of remote sensing, resource mapping, computer simulations, and recycling technology.

It is a broad discipline concerned with the research and analysis of geological, geophysical and geochemical data to develop models of the earth to discover commercially viable natural resources such as oil, gas, minerals and water.
It is a discipline concerned with the analysis and classification of minerals, mineral deposits, and precious stones.
This field is concerned with the study of the properties of water, the assessment of water sources, identification of water pollution threats etc.
It is a broad domain associated with the study of the seabed and the coastal zone.
It is the scientific study of the composition, texture, and structure of rocks.
It is the study of fossils found in geological formations. It includes the process of tracing the evolution of animal and plant life, and making estimates about their age.
Seismology is primarily concerned with locating and analysing earthquakes.

How to become a Geologist?

Step 1
Take Science Stream at the 10+2 level with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics

To take up an undergraduate course in Geology, you need to have passed the higher secondary examination in the science stream with any or all of the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Also, taking Geology (which is offered only by a select number of boards) as one of the subjects gives you advantage in admission to some universities.

Step 2
Take BSc/ BSc(Hons) in Geology

A three year bachelor’s course in geology is available in many universities in India and abroad.

Note :

Some universities like the Delhi University offer a dual BSc-MSc integrated degree in Geology which is of five years duration.

Step 3
Take MSc Geology or MSc Applied Geology

Master’s degree in Geology/ Applied Geology is of two years duration and can be taken up after completing BSc Geology.


Some Universities allow admission to MSc Geology for BA/BSc/BCom/ BTech graduates in any discipline provided they have a high percentage aggregate and have taken Science stream at the 10+2 level.

Step 4
Take MPhil/PhD in Geology

Since this is more of a research field, a doctorate qualification would be recommended.
