As a public administrator, you will be involved in the implementation of government policies in various sectors of public service. You will be monitoring and trying to improve the effectiveness of the different services provided by the government to the public.

Public administrators deal with the detailed and systematic enforcement of public policy. They organize and implement government policies and programs to serve the public at the best. A public administrator also plays a major role in policy making in different fields as they identify major policy areas, prepare policy proposals, analyze various alternatives and divide policies to sub policies.

What does a typical day at work involve?

The tasks of public administrators in a typical day’s work may vary depending on the departments they work in. These may involve

  • Checked Planning, directing and coordinating the support services of an organisation
  • Checked Supervising administrative and clerical personnel
  • Checked Creating new public policies and following them up
  • Checked Goal setting and creating deadlines for the departments to achieve them

What areas can a public administrator specialize in?

Deals with the control and management of all the programs and processes that make the nation’s transportation systems run. They would also recommend changes to make transportation systems more cost-effective and efficient.
Deals with the development and implementation of public health policies and programs on a large scale.
Deals with the development of programs and policies on an international level. Would be working with international organizations like the United Nations to develop policies and programs that focuses on larger problems that affect the international community as a whole.
Deals with the evaluation of the existing policies to figure out its limitations and thereby formulating more improved and effective ones.

How to become a Public administrator?

Step 1
Take any stream at +2 level

Studying any stream at the plus two level would be a sufficient eligibility for pursuing courses in the domain of public administration.

Note :Humanities

Choosing Humanities stream would be recommended as it will help you get some insights into the basic concepts regarding society, government and policies at the plus two level itself so that you are able to develop a base in the field of Public Administration.

Step 2
Take B.A. Public Administration

At the UG level, the course offered in this area is B.A Public Administration. You can also a B.A. Political Science, since Public Administration is not a very popular course at the UG level.

Step 3
Take M.A. public Administration

After completing UG, you can go for a master’s in Public Administration which is of 2 years duration.

Step 4
Go for M Phil and PhD

After pursuing master’s, you can go for an M.Phil or PhD if your profile (including projects, research papers, and internships) and research proposal is excellent. M Phil will be of 1 to 2 years duration and PhD will take a minimum of 3 years.

  • A bachelor’s degree in any discipline.

Public Speaking

Public Administrators may have to deliver a number of presentations to the public on different ideas and issues. Having excellent oratorical skills would be very useful.
