As a sociologist, you’ll be focussing on the study of the impact of society and social interactions on individuals and vice versa.
A sociologist studies the human social life or how people act within societies and groups. They examine social interactions, relationships, institutions, organisations, policies, movements and other social processes and studies the social behaviour that develops when people work together. They also design and implement research studies that test their theories on social issues.
Studying humanities with Sociology as a subject at the 10+2 level will help you understand the basics of the field of sociology. Securing a minimum aggregate score would be a prerequisite for admission into bachelor degree courses in sociology in most of the prominent universities in India.
There is no subject or stream requirement as such to become eligible for admission into sociology courses. But as pointed out earlier, it’s better to choose humanities stream with sociology as one of the subjects.
The common course offered at the UG level in this area is BA Sociology. The duration of the course is usually three years.
After completing UG, you can go for a master’s in Sociology. The duration of the master’s courses are usually two years.
Graduates from any background who have successfully completed their bachelor degrees would be eligible for admission into master’s level courses in sociology in most of the Indian universities.
After pursuing Master’s you can go for M Phil or direct PhD if your profile (including projects, research papers, and internships) and research proposal is excellent. A doctoral degree would be useful for taking up a career in the academia.

Sociologists should possess proper knowledge and understanding of research methods, and statistical techniques to effectively conduct qualitative and quantitative research on the data they acquire from various sources.
Sociologists should have the ability to analyze and evaluate complex ideas like social phenomena and structures, major sociological concepts, and historical and contemporary social issues. They should also possess a broader perspective that allows them to relate their sociological knowledge to the formulation of various social, public and civic policies.
